Why this water?

Crab Orchard Lake in Southern Illinois caught my attention because it represents classic cover: tidal movement, bridges, mangroves, and quiet channels that get overlooked. The goal was to see if a slow, patient approach could uncover some quality fish.

Exploring random spots is all about reading the cover. Stumps, lily pads, creek bends, or tidal flats are the perfect hotspots, especially when the water gets moving.

Access and conditions

Getting the kayak launched required sliding down a sandy bank, but the effort was worth it. The water was clear with about 3-4 feet of visibility, which meant we had to target cover very tightly.

When visiting similar public spots, always verify public access rights and watch for changing water levels. Small creeks and tidal estuaries rise and fall quickly.

Would I fish it again?

Yes, absolutely. The amount of untouched cover in these random spots is exactly why we explore. It rewards accurate casting and patience over speed.

If you enjoy kayak fishing, wading creeks, or just checking out new water on a whim, these spots are a must-visit.
