Scouting the Map
The best fishing in the Midwest often happens in places that aren't on the cover of magazines. Small farm ponds, county park lakes, and state conservation areas are packed with bass. Use satellite view to look for standing timber, old creek channels, and public road access points.
Scouting Checklist
- Verify public access and state regulations (Illinois DNR or Missouri MDC).
- Look for bridge crossings on creeks with space to legally park.
- Pack light—be prepared to drag a kayak or wade a shoreline.
- Start by casting confidence baits to gauge if active bass are present.
